The animal rescue association M.A.R.A. (Murcia Animal Rescue Association) was formed by a small group of people who care about the fate of abandoned and/or abused animals in the region of the community of Mula, a small town situated in the North-West of the spanish province of Murcia. This area of Spain is inland and a rural community with a mainly agricultural economy. Seeing the suffering of abandoned animals and the cruelty, together with the knowledge that the town hall of Mula use professional dog catchers / collectors (most of those animals gathered are euthanised after 21 days), a few like minded people decided they needed to do something about this, however small that help would be. This resulted in the founding of M.A.R.A.in February 2008. The association is registered, controlled, and has the obligation to give feedback to its members and is run on a democratic basis by a voted committee. Until very recently M.A.R.A. had no premises to keep their rescued animals until they were re-homed. The dogs were mainly living with the volunteers who were able to foster the animals until permanent homes could be found, or in extreme cases where medical treatment was required the animals were given space within the veterinary clinics (as is the situation with Kain 26/03/2010). The Town Hall have now given M.A.R.A. a small piece of ground in the local council depot.
M.A.R.A. like all rescue associations are struggling to survive, there are never enough people to help with the day to work of cleaning, feeding, veterniary runs etc, and not surprisingly insufficient funds, where as is always the case somehow costs far out weigh what can actually be afforded. The majority of the animals taken in are undernourished, in appalling condition, wounded and / or maltreated (common maltreatment includes starvation, hanging with wire and tied to trees to die, thrown from moving cars on main highways, puppies and kittens are routinely dumped in rubbish bins, tied in bags, shot, poisoned or even beaten to death). M.A.R.A. like A.N.N.A. and many other rescue associations is trying within its limited power to make a difference. One life saved is one less left to suffer and die.
